29. The HB9CV DF Antenna. ZS6RVC-ZS6TJ Project for Fox Hunting.

The HB9CV antenna is a popular directional antenna invented by Swiss amateur radio enthusiast Rudolf Baumgartner in the 1950s. It features two dipoles and is known for its simplicity, reasonable gain, good front/rear gain ratio, and compact dimensions. It’s especially popular among ham radio users and is mainly used in the high HF and VHF bands.

If you need more specific details or dimensions for the HB9CV antenna, there are online calculators available that can help you find the exact dimensions based on your requirements3.

The HB9CV antenna works by using two active dipoles separated by a distance of approximately one-eighth of the wavelength. A conductor between the dipoles establishes a phase shift, typically around 225 degrees, which reinforces the gain and allows for a high front/back radiation ratio, up to 40 dB. This design makes it effective for medium-range communication between two points using ham radios.

It’s arranged in an ‘H’ shape when constructed and can be portable or attached to a permanent point for better coverage.
